Coltello del Amore ( Wedding Knife or Lover's Knife) by Saladini: Black
Coltello del amore "Lovers Knife" or "Wedding Knife" ( Coltelleria Saladini)
This beautiful handmade knife is an elegant reminder of Italy's fascinating ancient traditions surrounding weddings and courtship. The coltello del amore remains a frequent wedding gift today to Italian brides and grooms due to its elegance and link to Italian family tradition. This knife is entirely handmade, involving hundreds of inlays creating the detailed designs of bride and groom and symbols of happiness, protection and fertility. The main body of the knife's handle is made of buffalo horn with bone and silver inlays, cut and polished to a beautiful finish, requiring more than 2 weeks of work by a single artisan.
The history of lovers’ knives is deeply rooted in popular traditions of central and southern Italy, dating back to the 18th century. The coltello del amore was given to a lover or betrothed as a symbol of love and protection. The blades were engraved with a few dedicated words which told of mysterious tales and secret loves. The handles had white bone inlays which looked like eyes (known as dice eyes); according to tradition they were there to ward off the jealous gaze of anyone looking at your lover. Lovers’ knives are highly decorated pieces and consequently they are very complicated to make, and they still hold the same ancient charm as they did in times gone by.
The Italian Wedding Knife ( Lover's Knife / Coltello del amore ) is appreciated as a wedding gift or anniversary gift by Italian American families interested in preserving and celebrating a beautiful tradition.
